About Tesla
How Tesla describes its home energy model
Tesla states that its Solar Panels are built for high-performance residential use and are designed to integrate with its other products for a complete home energy ecosystem, managed through the Tesla app.
Tesla states that ordering starts online. Tesla states that a customer enters a home address and average electric bill to see recommendations for Solar Panels and Powerwall, and that installation is handled directly by Tesla in some areas and through Tesla Certified Installers in others. Tesla's Solar Panels page now also promotes a Tesla Solar Lease with a monthly price.
Solar Panels, Powerwall, and the end of Solar Roof
Tesla states that its Solar Panels are engineered in California and assembled at Gigafactory New York. The company states that the panels use cascading cell technology with laser-cut cells forming 18 power zones, which it describes as three times more than conventional panels, so a panel can keep producing efficiently in shade or dirt. Tesla also states that the panels have all-black cells, concealed electrical connections and a low-profile skirt that keeps hardware hidden.
Tesla no longer offers Solar Roof to new customers. The Solar Roof page on tesla.com now leads to the Solar Panels page, and trade reports in August 2026 said Tesla had stopped supplying Solar Roof tiles to installers; Tesla made no public announcement. Solar Roof was a roofing product built from glass solar tiles and architectural-grade steel tiles designed to integrate with Powerwall, and existing owners should confirm their service and warranty route with Tesla directly.
Tesla states that Powerwall is a compact home battery that stores energy generated by solar or pulled from the grid, for use day and night, during outages or when a homeowner wants to go off-grid. The company states that Powerwall has customizable power modes, an integrated solar inverter, and a Storm Watch feature that charges it to maximum capacity when severe weather is forecasted.
- Solar Panels: all-black, low-profile panels with concealed connections, as Tesla states it.
- Solar Roof: no longer offered to new customers as of 2026; its product page now leads to Solar Panels.
- Powerwall: home battery storage with outage protection, as Tesla states it.
How a Tesla project runs
Tesla states that, after placing an order, the customer signs in to a Tesla Account to upload a utility bill, after which Tesla schedules a site assessment. The company states that its design team uses the utility bill along with the site assessment information, or satellite imagery on the solar panels order page, to design a system for the home's energy needs. When the design is ready, Tesla states that the customer can confirm payment details, make changes or schedule a consultation in the Tesla Account.
Tesla states that if an address is in an area where Tesla installs, Tesla brings the equipment and installs at the same time, and that if Tesla does not provide service directly, an order may be installed through Tesla Certified Installers. Tesla states that an out-of-territory address can reserve solar and Powerwall and be notified when products become available.
Warranty and coverage as Tesla states them
Tesla states that its Solar Panels and mounting systems come with a 25-year warranty, and its Solar Panels specifications list a 25-year product and performance guarantee. That is the clearest long-term term Tesla publishes on the pages reviewed for this profile.
For storage, Tesla support specifications list a 10-year warranty for Powerwall models. For Solar Roof, which Tesla no longer offers to new customers, no warranty term is quoted here; existing owners should read their own warranty documents.
