About Sunrun
Solar as a service, with purchase and loan options alongside
The company presents its main offer as a solar subscription, which its site describes as its best selling solar lease and as solar without the costs of ownership. Its site says the subscription offers predictable monthly payments with locked-in rates and little to no money down for qualifying customers. The company states it owns and maintains subscription systems, and that plans can transfer if the home is sold.
Alongside the subscription, the company states that homeowners can purchase panels outright, use a solar loan, or choose a prepaid lease. Its site names its purchase route as BrightBuy and its loan route as BrightAdvantage. For ownership, the company says the homeowner owns the system outright and services and cares for it.
How a project runs, from first quote to permission to operate
The company describes a three step start: share a bill and address so a solar advisor designs a system for the roof, then expert installation by a local installer who handles permitting, then generation once the utility approves.
The company states that after approval the property undergoes a site assessment, its Solar Design Experts adjust the design for final approval, and it then submits the design to the city for permitting, which its site says can take up to eight weeks. Installation is then carried out by Sunrun or a local certified partner, the city or county performs a final inspection, and documents go to the utility for Permission to Operate.
Panels, battery storage and monitoring technology
The company states that its solar panels use high-efficiency photovoltaic cells and are designed for durability and longevity. Its site explains the system as panels, an inverter, the home electrical panel, a Sunrun meter and a utility meter working together, with excess energy flowing to the grid for credits where the utility allows it.
For storage, the company offers battery options its site describes as backup batteries for outages or non-backup options for energy management. Its battery pages say a home battery can keep lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi and other essentials running automatically when the grid goes down, and can store excess solar for use at night or during peak hours. The company names the Tesla Powerwall 3 as a battery it pairs with solar, and says homeowners track production in the mySunrun app.
The Sunrun Guarantee and how warranty cover differs by plan
The company calls its service package the Sunrun Guarantee, and describes it as a comprehensive repairs, maintenance and monitoring program. On its subscription page, the company states a 25-year equipment guarantee, 25 years of free maintenance and repairs, and complete service coverage over the course of the agreement. Its site says that coverage includes a production guarantee that credits the customer if the system underperforms.
Cover differs for buyers. The company states that purchased systems carry manufacturer equipment warranties, a 10-year workmanship guarantee and a 5-year roof penetration warranty. For subscription customers, its pages list workmanship and energy production guarantees for the life of the contract, a 5-year roof penetration warranty and 24/7 monitoring. Buyers can add an optional Protection Plus package for full-service coverage, its site says.
- The company states subscription equipment is warrantied with service coverage for 25 years
- Its site says the production guarantee credits customers if the system underperforms
